Bourbon’s new arctic AHTS vessel
prepares for Control Cutter

ANCHOR HANDLING

Utilising the ControlCutter as a quick release technology for AHTS’s not only significantly increases vessel safety but also leads to increased operational efficiency through optimized work processes for anchor pre-lay/retrieval, eliminating manual operational steps as well as fuel reduction to ultimately save costs.

Subsea cutting

ControlCutter`s technology can be applied subsea to more efficiently cut anchor chains, wires, or risers, thereby reducing abandonment costs. During ROV based installation there is no need for any umbilicals from topside support equipment. ControlCutter can perform multiple cuts during the same operation.

IN AN EMERGENCY, CONTROLCUTTER WILL CUT CHAINS
UP TO 167 MM IN LESS THAN 3 SECONDS

By installing ControlCutter as an emergency release tool the crew and vessel owner can be confident they have a tested and demonstrated emergency release function they can rely on. The technology instantly releases the vessel from any load in a controlled and predictable manner. Activation of the ControlCutter will ensure the chain or wire is cut instantly without any damage to either the winch system, deck equipment or vessel in general. Operations can again proceed after the chain or wire has been retrieved from the seabed.

The system

A dual setup ensure cutting on demand as well as prohibiting cutting when required. To ensure operability, the system is continuously monitored. The knives used to cut the chain are a unique alloy developed to resist the large forces. In emergency, it will cut chains up to 167 mm in less than 3 seconds. The technology opens up many new opportunities, which provides for an even broader cooperation within all branches of the maritime sector. Our knowledge will always be available in the important work of making life at sea even safer.
